HDEV 155 Assertiveness Course Description
This class is designed to help students learn the skills of expressing themselves in positive, self-enhancing ways. Areas of focus include the following: recognition of appropriate rights for you and the other person; distinguishing between and choosing assertive vs. aggressive vs. passive/nonassertive behavior (including common causes and pros and cons of each); how beliefs/thoughts influence feelings and behaviors and how to change your thinking from irrational thoughts or rationalizations to rational thoughts (at least some of the time :-)); types of assertive messages; effective listening (including paraphrasing and checking out the message received or reaction); alternatives to assertiveness (including problem-solving); refusing requests (saying "no") and giving and receiving compliments; handling aggressive reactions in yourself and from others.
