Basic Thesis
A thesis statement informs
your audience about your purpose in writing and your intended goal within one
sentence; however, a thesis statement may be more than one sentence. In order to
formulate a working thesis, you may use the following formula to create a
writer-based thesis.
I want to [purpose
verb] [subject] for [audience] so that [an intended goal or change] is
achieved or brought about.
Remember a writer-based sentence does not
address the reader, so your thesis will need to be transformed into a
reader-based thesis.
Example:
I want to explain the writing
process to entering Freshman in order to show that by using it, they will enjoy
writing.
Transformed:
Writing has sometimes been called torture;
however, frustrated students who use the writing process may find that writing
can be enjoyable.
