Biography

Hi! Thanks for visiting my Clark College math course website. My name is Professor Sally Keely. I hold BS and MS degrees in mathematics from Portland State University. My thesis was in topology, the study of surfaces in many dimensions. I have been teaching for over twenty years. I am tenured faculty at Clark College. I am very committed to the community college system and the opportunities it provides. Let me tell you a little about my teaching philosophy.

During the 80's my classes were fairly traditional lecture format. Toward the late 80's I was teaching at the newly opened Pierce College in Puyallup Washington. The classes were very small and interactive so I was able to start experimenting with small group projects. The 90's brought a major reform movement to math education on an international level - increased collaboration, inventive assessments, graphing calculators and improved technology. This suited my personality and teaching style. I came to Clark in 1996 and earned tenure in Spring 1999. My classes at Clark are now very collaborative, lots of group work, but still with a strong lecture component.

Since I have always been into computers and programming, the next logical step for me was to start teaching online. I began teaching some sections of math at Clark online in Fall 2000. I also teach a classes a few times a year for the University of Phoenix Online.

Be it on-campus or online, my classes are learner-centered environments. I see my role more as a facilitator. This is in line with my teaching motto, "I am not here to teach at you, I am here to help you learn."

On the more personal side, I live on five acres in SW Washington state with my dear husband and our young daughter. We spend a lot of time working on our home and land and enjoying our Columbia River view from our perch at 2200 feet. When we get time we enjoy hiking, caving, and camping in the Gorge and Cascades with our canine buddy (Dexter, border collie/golden retriever).

Since having my daughter my hobbies are, well, a moot point!  But in theory, I am an avid reader and enjoy working intriguing math problems and puzzles. Any spare time (ha, ha!) I may have is spent developing websites (I maintain several websites and run many listservs for non-profit organizations). I'm active in (and a former Officer of the Board of) WAMATYC, the Washington state affiliate of AMATYC, the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. I'm also actively involved with (and a former member of the Board of Directors of) DES Action, the international non-profit organization committed to people exposed to DES (diethylstilbestrol). We are home educating our daughter which is a 24/7 commitment to learning, both hers and mine, and loving every minute of it. Luckily, I'm an insomniac so I'm able to squeeze hours out of each day and night and I'm happiest when I super busy :)

If you are reading this because you are enrolled in one of my classes then I look forward to working with you! I hope you find the information posted in this course website useful.
