Prof. Keely's Faculty Web ~ Clark College, Vancouver WA
Introductory Biography

Hi! I am Professor Sally Keely at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, U.S.A. Here are some quick facts about my professional background:

bulletLeft High School early to attend UC Santa Barbara. Majored in mechanical engineering, computer programming, and developmental psychology before earning B.S. and M.S. degrees in mathematics from Portland State University.

bulletStarted teaching at Mt Hood CC just before my 20th birthday. First tenured position was at Pierce College in Puyallup WA. Came to Clark College in 1996, tenured in 1999. Taught part-time at the Univ. of Phoenix Online since 2002. Have now taught college maths for 30 years.

bulletCreated the Clark College online math program in 1999. Now help coordinate about 18 different online math classes and 15 online math faculty.

bulletEarned a C.O.I. (Certified Online Instructor) in 2005. Authored a series of algebra e-books called GOLDen Mathematics in 2006. Became a Quality Matters certified Online Course Peer Reviewer in 2012.

bulletDeveloped the first ever in the NW full-online Calculus I-II-III for STEM courses in 2009. As of winter 2012 I have taught over 140 online math classes!

I volunteer and have served on the board of directors for three non-profit organizations: Washington Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (WAMATYC), Clark College's Faculty Association of Higher Education (AHE), and DES Action, the international organization dedicated to persons exposed to diethylstilbestrol (DES) (relatedly I served as the NW Coordinator for the Center of Disease Control's (CDC) DES Update Project).

On a more personal note, I was born in NY City, the first American in my family, and hold dual citizenship with Canada. My parents emigrated from England. My father was a theatrical actor and artistic director (plus you may have seen him on TV in some old sitcoms or movies).

I live atop a mountain (well, at 2200 feet) on five acres near Kalama, a small town in SW Washington state, with my husband, daughter (whom we home-educate), and our border collie/golden retriever.  I am an avid reader, politically active, and enjoy working puzzles, developing/maintaining websites (volunteer web designer for several non-profit organizations), hiking, caving, camping, and travel. As if that is not enough I am the Leader of my daughter's Earth Scout troop of homeschoolers (and active in Girl Guides and 4H). Luckily, I’m an insomniac :)

Math is fun, exciting, aesthetically beautiful, and intriguingly vital.  I hope through your math course you will improve your critical thinking skills and come to appreciate the usefulness of mathematics in your own career and life.  My goal is to help you to apply the concepts to your own profession and make your job easier and more productive.  This is in line with my teaching motto, "I am not here to teach at you, I am here to help you learn."
