Grammar:

Understanding & Using English Grammar: Chapters used depend on instructor & quarter.

Grammar may include: verb tenses, modals, passive voice, adjective/noun/adverb clauses, conditionals

 

Listening

Face the Issues (Also used by level 5) & Consider the Issues: Can be difficult; you may also want to create a cloz activity on a section of the listening (scripts in the back of the text)

Northstar: Focus on Listening & Speaking (High-Intermediate): Correlates with Northstar reading text; Units on a variety of topics (volunteering, media, etc.) that include 2 listenings & extensive pre/post activities

Guest Speakers: ENL (Priscila Martins-Read), Developmental Education (Jim Wilkins-Luton), Counseling (Stephanie Spak), Advisors, Vancouver Police (Kim Kapp), etc.; Campus visits: Career Center, ENL class, etc. Internet web sites

Speaking

React/Interact: Situations for Communication: Also used in level 5. Various activities (pronunciation, surveys, short readings, etc.)

Pair with college-level class

Presentations, mock interviews, etc.

Reading

Journeys Near & Far 2 (Reading & Responding Critically): Units & readings are shorter than Northstar; authentic readings on a variety of topics.

Northstar: Focus on Reading & Writing (High-Intermediate) : Correlates with Northstar listening text; Units on a variety of topics (ex. volunteering, media, environment) that include 2 readings, & extensive pre/post activities

News articles, advertisements, editorials, bills, Internet research

The Columbian newspaper (instructor may order): Also used in levels 4 & 5; Thursday’s paper includes a special "Neighborhoods" section

Writing

Writing Academic English: Text is comprehensive & at a very high level. Carefully select the chapters to use & be prepared to go over the material slowly & carefully.

Academic paragraphs & essays, journals, resumes, cover letters

* Night classes cover only 2 skills per quarter: listening/speaking OR reading/writing. Skills alternate each quarter.
