Text: Fundamentals of English Grammar, 3rd ed. (about 4 chps/qt.)

Grammar: Fall: verb tense review; word order; parts of speech

 

Cultural topics each week that incorporate all of the different skill areas:

Reading: newspaper/magazine articles, reports, graphs and tables, outside assignments such as information from web search, book (student’s choice re topic and difficulty level); following written directions; context clues; identifying the main idea, supporting ideas; skimming and scanning

 

Writing: distinguishing between a complete sentence and a sentence fragment or run-on sentence; spelling, note taking, paragraph writing, topic sentences; mapping and outlining; summarizing/rephrasing vs. plagiarizing, writing a book report, interview write-up and short report incorporating primary and secondary sources

 

Speaking: pronunciation practice (dictation, tongue twisters, riddles, oral station work), conversation skills (introductions, showing active listening in conversation, turn taking, echoing, interrupting, clarifying, sticking to the point, disagreeing and small talk) in small-group work or dyads and with volunteer native speakers, interviewing techniques, summarizing, giving a very short talk before a group (book report, optional topic)

 

Listening: improving listening acuity through dictation, active listening skills, following oral directions; recognizing the main idea and supporting ideas, distinguishing between fact and opinion or hype in conversation

Activities: dictation, listening to TV ads, short news reports and taped dialogues (Interactions and TOEFL prep. materials)

 

Culture:

• Politics: brief overview of gov’t system (elected positions, responsibilities); campaign issues and the media; Electoral college and how it works

• Holidays: Columbus Day, United Nations Day (10/24) Halloween, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving: history, customs

• Etiquette: reading packet and related activities; non-verbal communication, situation analysis
