Review the information on the table so you can be familiar with population information of different countries.

Sorry--If you looked at this table before Thursday, it had last term's data.  It's now accurate.

Students should be able to answer questions like the following: If country X has a low GDP per capita (under $10,000):

The table below is a summary of population characteristics for different countries.

Brief summary of role of women

High access to edu., politics, business, etc.

Some discrimination, 80-90% work in “factory like” conditions. Families prefer to have boy babies. Small access to college, due to discrimination. Raise children, keep house.

Slight discrimination, 21% lower salary on average; women more likely to give up school; unemployment is four times higher than men.

Major discrimination due to religion. Amount varies in different locations – ie. More in rural areas

Women’s roles have a lot to do with religious beliefs. Are Catholic, very family oriented. Sometimes women will have jobs to help support family, bc very poor and need all help. Raise children, other home responsibilities. Women used as drug mule and are trafficked.

Lower opportunities than men

Current environmental issues

CO2 emissions

Acid rain

Eutrophication of water

Fresh water shortages

CO2 emissions, air pollution. Second behind US in energy consumption.

Air pollution, water pollution from fertilizers.

A lot of waste and pollution due to many years of war and neglect.

Urbanization problems, serious air and water pollution mainly due to factories, etc.

Desertification, loss of wetlands, inadequate fresh water supply
