Course Description Biology 104 is a five credit, introductory-level course with no prerequisites. This class is intended for nonmajors and for those students who are undecided about going on to upper-level biology classes. The overall goals of this class are to help students: (1) understand and appreciate the value of the natural world in which we live and share with other organisms, (2) understand and demonstrate the process of scientific inquiry, and (3) identify and critically evaluate the uses of scientific inquiry in relation to relevant life issues. These goals will be accomplished using a variety of teaching methods including lectures, discussions, reading assignments, laboratory activities, and videos. The course is fast paced and will require your commitment to keep up with reading and reviewing and to bring relevant questions to class. It is my goal to assist your learning by providing appropriate instruction, hands-on application of material, links to the relevancy of this material to your daily lives, and enthusiasm for the subject. I look forward to the quarter ahead with you.
Topics that we will discuss during the quarter include biochemistry, cell structure and function, metabolism, photosynthesis, cell division (meiosis and mitosis), molecular genetics, diversity of life, and heredity. Successful completion of this class fulfills 5 credits of the laboratory science distribution requirement for an Associates of Arts degree and also fulfills the prerequisite for BIOL 201 (majors biology), BIOL 231 (Anatomy and Physiology), BIOL 162 (Human Genetics), and the Allied Health sequences. If you have taken AG 175 you will not receive credit for BIOL 104.
