*Area - measure of the surface inside a geometric figure.

Common Denominator – same bottom number used in comaring adding or subtracting fractions.

½ and ½ the common denominator is 6

Composite numbers – not primes ,can be divided by other numbers than themserlves.

*Cubic centimeter – 1 centimeter cubed (equals 1 milliliter)

Decimal – a specialized fraction using 10th, 100th,1000th

Decimal places (number of) – numbers of places to the right of the decimal.

Denominator – the number of times you divided a number into parts.

Difference – answer in a subtraction problem.

Digits – the actual numbers.

Dividend – the number that is being divided by another

In 14 ÷ 7 = 2, 14 is dividend

Divisible – can be divided evenly.

8 is divisible by 2 four times

Divisor – the number you divide into another number.

In 30 ÷ 6 = 5,

6 is divisor

Equivalent fractions – fractions having the same value (@ sign).

1 /4 @ 4/16

Estimation – getting a close approximation to the answer by rounding off numbers

499 = 51 = 380 @ 950

Exponent – number of times a factor occurs in a number, written.

8³ = 512

Factor – each of the numbers that is multiplied.

In 4 * 2 = 8,

Fraction – a part of a whole.

LCM Lowest common denominator – in a group of fractions, the smallest same bottom number they will go into evenly

 

Less than - < sign used to compare two numbers is that aren’t equal.

Like Fractions – fractions with the same denominator

 

  • 3/5 and 2/5 are like fraction

*Like Measurement – using the same units of measure to measure, add, subtract.

Lowest Terms – a fraction reduced to the lowest terms by dividing a fraction form of 1 into it .

Mean – (see average)

 

Median – set of numbers arranged from smallest to largest , medium point number.

Multiple –the times table for a number

The multiples of 4 are: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24…

Numerator – top number of a fraction

 In 3/4 , 3 is the numerator

Order of operations – proper order to do several arithmetic operations in.

Place value – the placement of the digits tell the value of the number

Percent increase, Percent decrease – find the difference then divide the amount of increase by the original amount.

Power of ten – whole numbers that begin with 1 and end with 1 or more zeros.

10, 100, 1000, 10000…

Prime factorization – factors that are prime numbers.

15 = 3 * 5,

3 and 5 are primes.

Prime number – whole number grater than 1that can only be divided by itself and 1.

 

Prime numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37 …

Product – answer in a multiplication problem.

In 5 * 6 = 30,

30 is the product

Proper fraction – fraction where the numerator is smaller that the denominator.

*Proportion – a statement that 2 ration or 2 rates are equal.

Quotient – answer in a division problem.

*Radius - a line segment from the center to any point on the circle.

*Rate – compares 2 quantities that have different units.

*Ratio – compares 2 like quantities.

4 mi /8 mi = ratio

Reciprocal – the opposite function used in dividing fractions.

The reciprocal of 3/4 divide by 1/2 = 3/4 x 2/1

*Rectangle – a geometric shape with 2 parallel sides equal.

 

Reduce - in fractions when finished with the problem divide by a form of 1.

 

Remainder – when 2 numbers don’t divide exactly, the amount left over.

7 ÷ 2 = 3 r. 1

Rounding ( to found) – estimating approximate a correct response by rounding

 

Scientific notation – changing the form of a number by moving the decimal until the number is between 1 and 9.

(remember how many places you move)

*Solve the proportion - cross multiply then divide by the remaining number.

 

*Square (noun) - geometric figure with 4 equal sides.

 

*Square ( verb) – to multiply a number by itself.
