Clark College
Model United Nations
Delegate Selection Criteria
Remember that going to any conference is an earned privilege, not a right. You
don’t get to go simply because you’re enrolled in the MUN class. Every student
is given the opportunity to earn a spot at a given conference. But since we
always have more students enrolled in the MUN program than delegate slots for a
conference, choices must be made. Among the criteria that the Program Director &
Advisor, Coach, and Head Delegate will use to make the decision of which
students will be chosen to represent the Clark College Model United Nations
program at a particular conference are the following:
-
Commitment to the program
-
Regular, on-time class attendance (includes staying for the entire class)
-
Paying respectful attention in class
-
Class participation
-
Attendance at voluntary practice sessions and mock conferences
-
preparation
-
appropriate, on-time completion of required and suggested conference related
papers such as position papers
-
performance
-
Enrollment in Clark College MUN the next quarter (if appropriate)
-
Performance in class
-
Attendance
-
Paying respectful attention in class
-
Class participation
-
Appropriate completion of assignments, worksheets, and group activities
-
Quiz and exam grades
-
Conference preparation
-
Appropriate, on-time completion of required and suggested conference related
papers such as position papers
-
Evidence of preparation for the conference
-
Demonstrated competence in rules and procedures
-
Teamwork and ability to work with partner (if applicable)
-
Performance at other conferences
-
Behavior at past conferences and other college events and activities
-
General attitude
-
maturity and
responsibility
-
collegiality and teamwork--the ability to work as part of a team, respect
others, and act diplomatically
-
Conference experience
-
Some conferences (“training conferences”) are meant specifically to provide
people newer to Model United Nations an opportunity to gain experience
-
Some conferences are more appropriate for more experienced delegates
Given the competition and the extent of the criteria listed above, selection to
represent Clark College is an earned honor and should be recognized as such;
however, not being selected is (in most cases) usually simply a matter of
numbers. It is almost always the case that more delegates deserve to go than we
have the space for. Please do not take it personally.Other important factors:
-
Delegates will be required to sign a document stating that they have read,
understand, and will abide by the Clark College Code of Student Conduct.
-
Delegates will be required to sign a document acknowledging the possible hazards
and risks associated with travel and conference participation.
-
Delegates will be required to sign a document promising to repay Clark College,
the ASCC, the Model United Nations program, the Program Director & Advisor,
Coach, Head Delegate, and/or any other participant for any non-refundable fees
and expenses associated with the conference, travel to and from, hotel,
transportation, and/or medical expenses resulting from cancelation, accident or
incident, theft, misconduct, or intentional decision.
-
Delegates will be required to pay a deposit.
-
Delegates will be required to complete a document that includes emergency
contact and health insurance information, food and drug allergies, and medical
conditions.
-
Delegates will need to disclose any medications and mental and/or physical
health conditions that may interfere with travel and/or successful participation
at a conference (anxiety, depression, phobias, motion sickness, etc.).
-
Delegates will need to consider whether they have the mental and physical
stamina and the ability to function autonomously required for travel and
successful participation at a conference. This includes:
-
Long hours in committee, social events, and sightseeing
-
Early rising, late bedtimes
-
Sharing a room and bed
-
Being responsible for proper nutrition and rest
-
Being responsible for medications and general health
-
Walking long distances
-
Delegates will be required to have any required documents, such as a valid photo
id and passport, required for travel, registration, and participation in a
conference.
-
Delegates should bring a color copy of the front and back of their passport and/or
driver's license.
-
Delegates will need to have copies of any necessary prescriptions as well as the
appropriate official pharmaceutical documentation listing side effects and
symptoms of overdose and withdrawal.
-
Delegates unwilling or unable to sign the required documents and/or supply the
required information will be ineligible to attend the conference and will be
replaced by another student.
-
Responsible behavior is essential. There are usually more students ready,
willing, and eligible to go to a particular conference than there are delegate
slots available. When a tie-breaker is necessary, a student who has less
potential for, or past evidence of, irresponsible behavior of any kind will be
selected.
