Week 1 Welcome and introductions

1.      What’s expected for presentations and discussions

3.      Using Power Point for your Presentations

4.      Working on Presentation topics and schedule

Week 2  Chapter 3

1.      Historical Atlas (pgs22-23, 146-149)

2.   Turn in your questions you asked Americans, along with a summary of what they said.

1.      Choose a topic from the materials we have studied and present it to the class. Each student must speak for at least 2 minutes. (From Historical Atlas)

2.      Ask Americans: Who Votes in America, or should the government decide whether to keep someone alive when they are in a vegetative state?  Report and discuss the interesting things you find out.

Week 3  Chapters 3 - 4

1.      Historical Atlas (pgs 30-31 and 60-73) Trail of Tears (skim and scan)

2.   Turn in a summary of chap. 2

2.      Ask Americans about these topics: Success, Self Improvement, and Volunteering and report your findings to the class.

3.      Watch a movie: I Will Fight No More Forever

Week 4  Trail of Tears

1.      Historical Atlas (pgs 12-13, 100-101, and 158-159,)Trail of tears (115-139)

2.      Turn in a paragraph with your opinion on this subject by 5 o’clock on Friday.

1.      Ask Americans, read about the NRA and report what you find out about use of guns in this culture.

2.      Visit a college level classroom and do the observation from page 191. I'll give you a pass for you to show the instructor. Write a short paragraph explaining what you observed.

Week 5  Chapters 5-6

1.      Historical Atlas  (pgs 40-41, 98-99, 126-131) and Trail of Tears (140- 157)

2.      Test for Chapters 3,4.

3.      Turn in a topic outline for ONE of these chapters (3,4,5, or 6) by 5 o’clock on Friday.

1.      Ask Yourself and at least 5 Americans – the questions from page 124 Give results of your survey in class.

3.      Midterm  Presentations on Wednesday:  Speak for 5 Minutes; use Power Point

 

Week 6  Chapter 7

  1. Historical Atlas (pgs 38-39, 92-93, 112-113, 138-139)
  2. Test for Chapters 5, 6.
  3. Find the Bill of Rights, and discuss what it means to Americans

Week 8  Chapter 9

1.      Historical Atlas (pgs 82-83)  and Trail of Tears (175-193)

2.      Test for Chapters 7,8.

3.      Turn in an sentence outline for ONE of these chapters( 7 or 8 or 9).

1.      Ask Americans some questions from page 189 - both from exercise E and F. Then ask the same questions to different International students. How do the answers compare?

2.      Read an Internet article, or talk to someone about Home Schooling - discuss the topic in class.

Week 9  Chapters 10 and 12

1.      Historical Atlas (pgs 144-145,178-181 and 198-199)

1.      Final Oral Presentations – Your Opinion about one of the topics we have studied. Use PowerPoint, speak for 5- 7 minutes

2.      Find out for yourself: What are the different kinds of leisure activities available in this area? Discuss in class

 

Week 10 Review and Catch up

1.      Take home final test for Chapters 9 -  12

Turn in your "keeping track of Grades sheet"

1.      Final Oral Presentations – Your Opinion about one of the topics we have studied. Use PowerPoint, speak for 5- 7 minutes

2.      Watch the movie "My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding," or "Witness, " or Mrs. Doubtfireand come to class ready for discussion of the topic.
