The important things to study for the Test on Tuesday: Test covers chapters 7-10.

Chapter 7:

Study 7-2 Page 103 (How do you form the possessive for singular and plural nouns

Girl     bike = The girl’s bike (singular, one girl)

Girls   bike=The girls’ bike    (plural, more than one girl)

Study 7-3 pg. 105 Be able to underline the adjectives/modifiers in sentences.

For example, what kind of soup are you eating?

I am eating vegetable soup.  Vegetable modifies soup.

Is your school big or small?

It is a big school. Big modifies school.

Study pages 107 and 108 7-4, 7-5

The picture on page 120 will be on the test. You will have to look at the picture and write sentences using count and non-nount nouns. 

Chapter 8:

 Study page 132 8-1,page 134 8-2, page 138 8-4

 There will be a paragraph with indefinite, reflexive, and personal pronouns. You will be asked to underline the pronoun and label the pronoun.

 For example: He is a nice boy but doesn’t have anybody to play with.  He chooses to play by himself.

You would underline each of the bolded pronouns and write above them. So, he is a personal pronoun, anybody is a indefinite pronoun, and himself is a reflexive pronoun.

 Chapter 9:

 Study pg. 152, 9-2 and 9-3 

Be able to form a polite request with I as the subject.

 For example, May I borrow your pen? 

Be able to form a polite request with you as the subject.

For example, Will you pass the salt please?

 Study page 153 9-4 

Be able to form a “would you mind” sentence.

For example, Would you mind if I closed the door?

Study page 160 9-7

Be able to form a sentence using an advisability modal, should, ought to, or had better.

For example, I don’t do well in school.

 You should study harder.

Study page 163 9-8

Be able to form a sentence using the past form of should modal

I didn’t do well on the test. I should have studied more.

Chapter 10 

Study page 176 10-1

Be able to match sentences with degrees of certainty

 If a person is very sure of something we use a verb and not a modal.

 He is sick.             This is true/a fact 100%

He must be sick.   This expresses a strong degree of certainty 95%

He might be sick.   We are just taking a guess. We don’t really know. Less than 50%

Study page 181 10-3

 Be able to match sentences with degrees of certainty for the past time also. 

She was sick.  This is true/a fact 100%

She must have been sick. We really believe she is sick 95%

She may have been sick.  We are guessing that she is sick. Less than 50%

 Study page 195 10-7

You will be asked to form a sentence using would or used to.

 For example,

 I used to live in California.

When I was younger, my father would read to me.
