COURSE INFORMATION: ENL 055 Grammar, Sec. A, Level 5 Spring ‘05 T/Th 10:30-11:50 AM in AA5 222. Pre-requisite: consent of division for this 5-credit class. (SLEP score of 53, or TOEFL score of 170).

Advanced grammar course designed to teach/review/refresh the use of grammar for academic settings. I will use a variety of activities to provide the student with opportunities for application and for practice of the material learned in class to written and spoken English as well as lectures, small group exercises, question/answer sessions, and lab practice to introduce or review the grammar points needed. Students are required to participate fully in all class sessions.
POINTS TO BE COVERED IN THIS CLASS THIS QUARTER: This class will emphasize correct use of grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and word usage in the development written and spoken communication. Grammatical points to be covered depend on the needs of this class. They will include, but we are not limited to the following: (See the Quarter at a Glance for specific dates)
Quotations
ESL specific problems with verbs, use of adjectives, articles, conditional sentences
Correcting sentence fragments, run-ons, agreement (subject and pronouns)
Correct use of active verbs, parallel structure in sentences
Adding variety to sentence structure
Punctuation
Paying attention to the cultural aspect of the class such as timeliness and appearance of the work, as well as appropriate oral interactions in class.
COURSE POLICIES: I expect every student to:
come to every class on time, to do his or her best to learn the material, to ask questions, to use only English during class periods.
participate in discussions of the materials being studied
read the material before coming to class – come with specific questions about it.
take responsibility for the work that needs to be done
turn in assigned homework on time
talk to me if there is a problem with a deadline
inform me if there must be an absence
be aware that more than 2 absences will affect grade
honestly give credit to sources of information

ASSESSMENTS AND GRADING:
Assessment will be based on scores obtained from chapter quizzes, midterm and final tests, on the scores from your homework assignments, and on class participation. Homework assignments will be worth a maximum of 10 points per assignment. Please check your Quarter at a Glance for specific due dates for tests and homework assignments.
Formula: total in class test scores +(total homework assignment scores ¸2)+a maximum of 1 point per week for participation = your score.
90%-100% = A- A+, 80%-89% = B- B+, 73%-79% = C C+, 65%-72% = C-, 55%-64% = D- D+, 00%-54% =F
