QUIZZES, TESTS:    Will be given as needed. Some may be announced, others may be surprise quizzes. Be Prepared! Questions will come from textbook or from in class exercises.

WEEK 1     Introductions       Bedford 575-590 and Bedford 680-692 

WEEK 2     ESL Trouble Spots    Bedford Part VI   345-380          Homework:  Read the assigned reading for Composition 5 and use the information there to write:  1 sentence that includes a direct quotation, 1 sentence with an indirect quotation, 1 sentence using direct quotation and the ellipsis mark, 1 sentence using direct quotation and brackets. You may use either APA or MLA styles. Study irregular verbs for surprise quizes in the next few weeks.

WEEK3       Continue with Bedford Part VI             Homework:  Use the material from the reading assignment for Composition class to, in your own words,  give me the following types of conditional sentences: 1 factual,  1 predictive, 1 speculative -unlikely possibility, 1 speculative - event that did not happen, 1 speculative - condition contrary to fact. Explain each one by saying whether or not things will or won't happen.

WEEK 4      Bedford Part VI           Homework: Write complete sentences, each using 1 verb  from each category on pages 356 and 357 - 5 different sentences.  Now take each of these and add at least 2 adjectives or adverbs, or both adjectives and adverbs to make these sentences longer and more interesting. Use the topics from your readings for the content of your sentences.

WEEK 5      Review   and   Midterm: Study all materials up to now.    

WEEK 6     Clear Sentences      Bedford Part III   135-202                 

WEEK 7      Bedford Part III   135-202          Homework: 2 sentences using appropriate passive voice and one sentence each for all of the other types of parallelism explained on pages 143-146. Use the topics from your readings for the content of your sentences.

WEEK 8       Bedford Part III   135-202   Homework:  Use coordination to show that both parts of your sentence are equally important (2 sentences). Use subordination to show that one part of your sentence is more important than the other (3 sentences). Use the topics from your readings for the content of your sentences. Explain the difference between your sentences.

WEEK 9      Punctuation          Bedford Part VII   381-442         Homework: Write a response to a reading you have done for this class or for another class. Make sure the punctuation is correct.

WEEK 10     Continue with punctuation and review.
