Textbook: Understanding and Using English Grammar, 3rd Ed.  by Betty Azar

Class meets on TTH, from 12:30-1:50 in AA5 223

Other Resources: A good dictionary and a thesaurus, exercises from the web. See the grammar link at the language center to see a list of good sites to use when studying.

Course Objectives:    In this class, we will emphasize using correct grammar in speaking, in thinking and in writing. We will focus on using grammar at the sentence and the paragraph levels.

Course Studies – Grammar:    We will be learning some fairly advanced parts of English grammar to help you with academic writing. These topics include:

Chapter 12 – Noun Clauses

Chapter 13 – Sentence Structure and Adjective Clauses

Chapter 17– Adverb Clauses

Chapter 16 - Coordinating Conjunctions

Chapter 19 – Connectives that Express Cause and Effect,

Contrast, and condition.

Chapter 20 – Conditional Sentences

Homework: You will receive worksheets and assignments from the book.

bulletYou will be expected to keep these assignments in a notebook until the end of the term.

Grading:    Quizzes and 2 exams

Quizzes = 10 points each

Exams = 20 points each

Plagiarism or cheating will not be tolerated. If you hand in someone else’s work, or if you are caught cheating on a test, you will be given a 0 with no chance to redo the assignment or test.

bulletFinal Note: Students are expected to come to class on time, and to participate in discussions and in-class assignments. Students who have more than two unexcused absences, or are consistently late for class, will have their grade lowered by 10%.
