Textbook: Understanding and Using English Grammar, 3rd Ed.  by Betty Azar

Class meets on TTH, from 12:30-1:50 in JSH 115

Other Resources: A good dictionary and a thesaurus, exercises from the web. See the grammar link at the language center to see a list of good sites to use when studying.

Course Objectives:    In this class, we will emphasize using correct grammar in speaking, in thinking and in writing. We will focus on using grammar at the sentence and the paragraph levels.

Course Studies – Grammar:    We will be learning / reviewing English grammar to help you with academic writing and with speaking. These topics include:

Overview of verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, nouns, pronouns, clauses, questions and negatives, modals, adjectives

The order in which these will be presented will depend on the needs of the group. If there is time, we will also study the passive voice.

Homework: You will receive worksheets and assignments from the book and or from other sources.

bulletYou will be expected to keep these assignments in a notebook until the end of the term.

Grading:    Quizzes and 2 exams

Quizzes = 10 points each

Exams = 20 points each

Plagiarism or cheating will not be tolerated. If you hand in someone else’s work, or if you are caught cheating on a test, you will be given a 0 with no chance to redo the assignment or test.

bulletFinal Note: Students are expected to come to class on time, and to participate in discussions and in-class assignments. Students who have more than two unexcused absences, or are consistently late for class, will have their grade lowered by 10%.
