COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a beginning computer course that will focus on developing skills that will allow students to feel comfortable using computers as well as other technology used in the ENL Department. It will include technology and actual practice with the equipment, the Internet, e-mail and different software packages available for use in the center. Lectures, small group discussions, hands on exercise sessions, and homework activities will be used to provide students with  many opportunities to develop Information Technology skills.

COLLEGE ABILITIES ADDRESSED/ LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Clark College focuses on 6 campus wide abilities in order to give the students a good educational foundation. They are: Critical thinking/problem solving, Information Technology, Communication, Lifelong Learning, Global Multicultural, and Effective Citizenship abilities. Even though we will touch on all of these throughout the quarter, this course will emphasize level 1 Information Technology and Life-Long Learning abilities.

  1. Life-Long Learning, by expressing an interest and desire to obtain answers to questions, by assuming responsibility for their own learning, by exhibiting self discipline and good work habits.
  2. Information Technology, by gaining skills to be able to identify and to use the internet, software resources, and equipment at the language center, and by preparing the  students to succeed in continuing education.

EXPECTATIONS

As the instructor for this class, I expect every student to come to class on time, to do his or her best to learn the material, to ask questions, to use only English during class periods, to participate in discussions of the materials being studied, to read the material before coming to class, and to turn in assigned homework on time. I will not keep reminding students of the work you need to do. If you have a problem and can not do your homework on time, please talk to me. Students with one absence will have their grades significantly impacted. I also expect students to have fun while learning!

HOMEWORK

Turn homework in at the beginning of the class period. Check the quarter at a glance for dates and specific work you have to do, and as you learn to use e-mail, check it every week for communication with me. Be sure to answer your instructor’s questions, and to ask questions when you don’t understand the directions.

GRADING

Grades will be based on scores obtained in midterm and final tests, on your level of participation in class, and on the scores from your homework assignments.

Formula: total in class test scores + (total of homework assignment scores ÷ 2) = your score.

SUPPORT SERVICES AVAILABLE

I am available to answer your questions during my office hours, by appointment, or immediately after class.

The Language Center assistants are available to help you at the Language center. Please check this website for hours: http://www.csci.clark.edu/~enl/
