Introductions and In class writing.

How much do you know about paragraph writing? Plan for the quarter

Unit 1 Review of different types of Paragraphs/essays

Recognizing good paragraphs /essays

2.

Continue with Unit 1, - Main ideas, topic sentences, concluding sentences, hooks and titles. Study vocabulary from this unit. 

Do as many of the exercises in unit 1 as you think you need to do in order to really understand this material. Bring questions to class for discussion.

Homework: find 1 picture that you like a lot and pretend you need to write 3 different kinds of paragraphs/ essays about it – one a definition, one a process, and one a narrative. Write topic sentences, outlines and titles for each one. Bring them to class on Thursday.

 

Start Unit 2

Homework: Choose one of your paragraphs/essays started on Tuesday and finish it. Level 3:Make sure you have a total of at least 7 sentences, plus your title. Level 4:Develop one of your outlines into a 5 paragraph essay. Bring to class.

Unit 2: Continue to do exercises from the text and bring questions to class.

Homework: Study vocabulary from these chapters. Revise your last essay. Quiz for last week’s material

Unit3:  Comparison Essays.  Making your sentences strong, clear and easy to follow.

In class writing. Paragraphs for level 3, essays for level 4

Unit 3 Continue to do exercises from the text and bring questions to class. 

Homework: Choose a topic to compare (Level 3) Bring to class today.

Finish Unit 3: Unity in your paragraph / essay – making your sentences/paragraphs  fit well together. Transitions

Homework: Revise and turn in your compare- contrast paragraph or essay.

Unit 4 Cause-effect Continue to do exercises from the text and bring questions to class. Quiz for last week’s material

Homework: be prepared to explain cause/effect to your classmates. Choose a topic you understand well to write about.

Unit 4 Cause-effect- Working with good logic. Order in your paragraph / essay.

Homework: Bring your cause-effect  paragraph/ essay to class

7.

Unit 4: Continue to do exercises from the text and bring questions to class. Quiz for last week’s material

Homework: Continue to edit, improve your cause-effect paper

Unit 4: Using your senses, adjectives and adverbs for great descriptions - Using words wisely – what is their connotation?

Homework: Bring your cause-effect  paragraph / essay to class for peer review.

Unit 5: Argumentative essays.

Homework: Read the newspaper, or watch the news. Pick a topic you feel strongly about and be prepared to share your opinion of it in class. Continue to do exercises from the text and bring questions to class.

Unit 5:  Making your opinion count – making it strong and defending it well.

Homework: Turn in your cause-effect  paragraph/ argument essay.

Unit 5: Argumentative essays. In class writing:  Is life in 2000 better than life in 1800? Why? Defend your ideas

Homework:  Continue to work on your argumentative paragraph/ essay

Unit 5: Argumentative essays.

 Homework: Bring your Argument essay for peer review.
