Assignment  Argument / Persuasion

This is the last assignment for this class.

A good argument shows readers the value of one position, and convinces them that it is the best view of the issue. You have read quite a few articles dealing with some aspect of our society, so you will be well prepared to take a position and defend it, or support it so that I can follow your point of view. The  topic is broad:  you are free to concentrate on any aspect, or on any of the subjects we discussed in class. See suggestions of types of questions to answer in your essays below:

bulletChoose one: Option 1.    Expand the last paper you have written (your cause-effect paper). Make sure that you have facts to back your statements!

bulletOption 2.    Use the readings we have done in class as a basis for your Argument paper. You can answer questions such as:
bulletAre Barbie dolls good toys for little girls? Why, or why not?
bulletIs the police really prejudiced in the way that it handles minorities and low income people? How do you know that?
bulletIs prejudice of any kind a problem for society? Why, or Why not?
bulletDoes technology help or hurt society? How do you know that?

Have fun writing, and see me if/when you run into difficulties.

 Here are the requirements:

bulletUse the appropriate organization pattern for the essay that you chose. See the  the tips for good argument papers for guidance on the best way to develop your paper.
bulletWrite an essay of 3 to 5 pages. It should have an introduction, a strong body where you defend your position, and a conclusion.
bulletTake one side of an issue only. You must choose one side and avoid the middle ground. It is much harder to defend a position when you can't quite make up your mind about it for sure.
bulletChoose an audience, then pay attention to it throughout your essay.
bulletPay attention to logic, and prove each point you make by explaining it and by giving concrete data to support it.
bulletDon't forget to mention the other side!
bulletHave a works cited or a reference page.
