Assignment Argument / Persuasion
The long paper is the last assignment for this class. It is also the final for this class.
A good argument shows readers the value of one position, and convinces them that it is the best view of the issue. You have read quite a few articles dealing with some aspect of our society, so you will be well prepared to take a position and defend it, or support it so that I can follow your point of view. The topic is broad: you are free to concentrate on any aspect, or on any of the subjects we discussed in class. See suggestions of types of questions to answer in your essays below:
| Choose one: Option 1. Expand the last paper you have written. Make sure that you have facts to back your statements! |
Option 2. Use the last readings we have done in
class as a basis for your Argument paper. You can answer questions such as:
|
Have fun writing, and see me if/when you run into difficulties.
Here are the requirements:
| Use the appropriate organization pattern for the essay that you chose. See the the tips for good argument papers for guidance on the best way to develop your paper. | |||||||
| Write an essay of 3 to 5 pages. It should have an introduction, a strong body where you defend your position, and a conclusion. | |||||||
| Take one side of an issue only. You must choose one side and avoid the middle ground. It is much harder to defend a position when you can't quite make up your mind about it for sure. | |||||||
| Choose an audience, then pay attention to it throughout your essay. | |||||||
| Pay attention to logic, and prove each point you make by explaining it and by giving concrete data to support it. | |||||||
| Don't forget to mention the other side! | |||||||
| Have a cover page. | |||||||
Have a works cited or a reference page.
|
| Turn it in on the last day of class. | |
| Make an appointment to see me during Finals week. I'll have a sign up sheet in class during the last week of classes. This appointment is a required part of your final assignment for this course. |
