Appropriate AttireGym clothes: t-shirt or sweatshirt, shorts or sweats, and court shoe.  Shirts must have sleeves and have a length that goes well below the waist.  Kneepads are optional.  Hats are allowed outside (ONLY).  Sunglasses may be worn outside as well.

Towels: You paid a $4.00 towel usage fee when you registered, so please utilize the towels. Towels will be furnished for each class.  If you do use a towel, please leave it in a green/white striped towel hamper before leaving.

Lockers:   Located at the north end of the main gym (men/west; women/east).   Select a locker and use your own lock.  Register your locker at the Fitness Center immediately.  Remove the contents of your locker, as well as the lock, at the end of the quarter.  Locks will be removed and the contents sent to security for 30 days if locks are either unregistered by the 10th day of the quarter or not removed by the last day of Final Exams.

Fitness Center Use:  Students enrolled in any PE activity course may use the Clark College Thompson Fitness Center free of charge for the quarter enrolled in the PE class.  You may gain access to the Fitness Center and Weight Room by scanning your Student ID card during any open time.  See the Fitness Center site for more information.  Please follow the dress code for these facilities.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Content:  This course is both an introduction to the fundamental skills and strategies of organized outdoor/beach volleyball and a course designed to further develop individual skills for the intermediate player.  Volleyball requires development of the following individual skills: forearm pass, set, attack, block, and serve.  In addition, students will gain an understanding of elementary team strategies.  Students will learn to practice effective communication with teammates.

Instructional Method:  Students will participate in a wide variety of drills and exercises to learn and improve their volleyball skills.  Demonstrations, practice, and feedback from the instructor will help students improve their volleyball skills and knowledge of the game. The typical class format consists of the following:

COURSE POLICIES

Lab Safety & Health:  Each student must fill out an Acknowledgment of Hazards and Risks form at the beginning of the quarter (this remains on file for the academic year...if the student has filled one out for a previous course in the same academic year, the student does not need to fill out another one).  Students are also asked to fill-out a Confidential Student Information Form including emergency contact information, which will be shredded at the end of the quarter.  Any illness, accident, or injury should be reported immediately to the instructor.

 Start time:  Students are expected to be dressed down and ready to begin at 12:05 and will be dismissed at 12:45 to allow time for clothing changes.

Tardy PolicyIf you arrive at class later than 12:05, you will be marked tardy.  Being tardy two (2) times will add one (1) absence to your total This course is graded primarily on participation and since we only have 40-minutes for class, we need everyone on time to make the class run the way it is intended.

Attendance Policy:   A student is allowed to miss four (4) contact hours (classes).  Any student missing five (5) or more contact hours is advised to withdraw from the course or receive an “Unsatisfactory” grade for the course.

COURSE EVALUATION

To receive a “Satisfactory” grade for the PE 158 course:

  1. Miss no more than four (4) classes

  2. Participate actively

  3. Pass a practical and written exam with at least 70% of total points correct

To receive a “Satisfactory” grade for the PE 258 course:

  1. Miss no more than four (4) classes

  2. Participate actively

  3. Assist instructor during skill practice by providing help to novice students in the class

  4. Assist instructor in giving the practical exam to the PE 158 course students

  5. Pass a written exam with at least 70% of total points correct

Grade Options: This course is graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory ONLY. “S” = Satisfactory and “U”= Unsatisfactory on your transcript.  There is no letter grade option for this course.   If you choose to audit the class, you must submit a change of registration form and let the instructor know by the date listed in the course schedule.

Withdrawal from course:  Refer to Clark College Course Schedule for more information.  The last day to withdraw from this course is Friday, May 22.

Students are responsible for insuring that their personal conduct is in accordance with the following guidelines.  Students are responsible for ensuring that their personal conduct is in accordance with the Clark College Student Code of Conduct.  If this code is not adhered to, Lee Brand, or a guest instructor, reserves the right to discipline students in a manor appropriate to the behavior, including but not limited to dismissing the student from the classroom, deducting points from an assignment, or reporting the student to the Vice President of Student Affairs.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION

In emergencies, students should do the following:

 

Inclement weather or emergency information Go to www.clark.edu or call 360-992-2000 as your first means of getting information.  The College does send notices to radio and television stations, but the College’s web site and switchboard are the official platforms for the most accurate information.
Immediate Emergency Communication Alert To receive immediate notice on emergencies, you can register your cell phone number to receive text pages and your email address to receive email messages.  To do this, go to www.flashalert.net.  Select “Subscribe” on the left, and follow the instructions.  Mass communication will also be sent to all College employee phones and computers.
Fire Alarm Evacuate the building through closest exit; evacuation maps are located in the hallways.  Take personal belongings only if it is safe to do so.  Remain at least 50 feet from the building.  Notify others of evacuation.  Do not re-enter building until instructed to do so.
Parking Lot Identifiers New parking lot identifiers using colors and numbers have been assigned to all Clark parking lots.  To help emergency or security personnel locate you, please refer to these identifying features.
Security Escort Security officers are available for escorts.  Please call 360-992-2133.
