Lab Description

HPE 258 Lab is intended to reinforce the concepts discussed in the lecture through active participation.  The lab is designed to educate students in various cardiorespiratory endurance, resistance training, and flexibility activities, as well as assessing their current physical fitness status.  The lab portion of this class meets the PE requirement for the Associates Degree; therefore, students should expect to exercise in each lab class.

Policies

Attendance is mandatory for the lab portion of class.  If a student has more than 4 absences, a failing grade will be received for the course.

Students are allowed 5 minutes at the beginning and end of class to dress-down. 

bullet

It is the student’s responsibility to check with the instructor concerning absences. 

bullet

If the student arrives late, it is the student’s responsibility to inform the instructor that he or she is present.

bullet

IMPORTANT!!!!  Students with five (5) or more absences in lab will receive a failing grade for HPE 258.  Withdrawal is recommended in this case.

Proper Attire

To receive full credit in lab, students must dress appropriately for participation in physical activity beginning with the second day of lab class.  Appropriate attire includes the following:

Athletic shoes appropriate for a gym floor

bullet

Torsos must be covered by sleeved t-shirt or sweatshirt that goes below the waist. 

bullet

Jeans are not acceptable. 

bullet

Hats may not be worn during class.

bullet

Excessive or dangling jewelry is also discouraged.

Students may not participate or receive credit if dressed inappropriately.

Student Locker Room Policy

Located at north end of the main gym (men= west; women= east)

bullet

Select a locker and use your own lock

bullet

Register your lock with the Thompson Fitness Center

bullet

Remove your lock and items by the last day of Final Exam week each term

bullet

Locks will be removed and contents sent to security for 30 days if locks are either unregistered by the 10th day of the quarter or not removed by the last day of Final Exam week

bullet

Contact security to secure items; after 30 days, items will be donated to charity

Evaluation

Students receive up to five (5) points for each lab that is actively participated in.  Up to ten (10) additional points will be received for completing each day’s assignment (lab sheet) correctly.   The grading criterion for these written assignments (lab sheets) will be based on the following:

Neatness & completeness

Accurate recording of results & correct calculation

Thoughtful reflection about what was learned
