Keyboarding at Clark College

Our keyboarding courses are variable credit (explained below) and are self-paced. Although you register for BTEC 100, the class you will actually complete and for which you will receive a grade will be either BTEC 101 or BTEC 190. Students taking both of these classes (plus an advanced course, BTEC 102, and an individualized review course, BTEC 010) are in the classroom at the same time working at their own pace.

On the first day of class, we determine which course you will follow. BTEC 101 is for beginners or for those who have not mastered keying by touch. BTEC 190 is for those students who type accurately by touch at least 25 words per minute at the beginning of the term. BTEC 102 is an advanced/continuation course that is taken after BTEC 101 or 190 AND BTEC 122 have been completed as prerequisites.

Explanation of Variable Credit: In order to receive a letter grade, you must complete three credits for any of these three courses. However, those three credits do not need to be completed all in the same term. For instance, you may finish two credits of BTEC 101 in Fall term and come back to complete the remaining credit during Winter or Spring term. Until you complete the third credit, your letter grade will be an "S" (showing satisfactory progress in the completion of 1 or 2 credits) or a "Y" (meaning you did not complete a credit during the term but are "in progress" in a variable-credit course). You should only register for as many credits as you are sure you will complete. If you register for 3 credits and only complete 2, you will have to pay for the third credit a second time when you come back to complete it. If, however, you sign up for only 2 credits and finish them in time to complete the third during a term, you can then add the third credit if you and your instructor determine that there is time left in the term to successfully complete the credit. It is advisable to register for the class one credit at a time unless you need a specific number in order to satisfy financial aid (or some other similar requirement).
