WHY I TEACH VOICE
Iwas fortunate to be raised in a nurturing music environment, beginning piano lessons at the age of six, joining the school band program to play the flute in the fifth grade, and being involved in music-making in both school and church. It was not until college that I found my love of singing and dedicated my career to the study of vocal and choral education. Perhaps I was always destined to become a music educator, since I began having my own piano students as a seventh grader myself, when my piano teacher had me start her beginning students for her.
Two years of directing first high school choral groups and then 10 years teaching middle school vocal and general music showed me how talented and capable young people are and how receptive they are to learning about their voices. My move to teaching voice seemed a natural one as I continued my own study of singing and the vocal arts. Seventeen years of teaching voice and choral groups at Clark College has been my most rewarding thing undertaking. And having the freedom to continue my own singing and performing endeavors has been so wonderful!
