PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING
I
believe everyone
has a voice; just not everyone has had the opportunity to reach
his or her potential as a singer. As I work with individuals
interested in exploring their singing abilities, I attempt to
focus on what each person needs to reach their goal as a singer.
I find that each person who comes to me first of all, loves
to sing, but may or may not be at the skill level he or she
wishes to achieve. It may be that they have technical issues
with their voice production related to either breath management
or resonance balancing. Or perhaps they lack knowledge of repertoire
needed to audition for a college or university program.
Some students
study singing as a hobby, and some study who plan on pursuing
singing as a profession – but all just want to be “better”
singers. I consider it my privilege to help people work to find
their “best” voice for where they are in their level
of development and training as a singer. My biggest expectation
is not that people who study with me are the next great Pavarotti,
but that they are the best THEY can be, working hard to master
skills, learn repertoire, and get to a point in their progress
where they freely share their voice with others, whether they
sing in a choir or choose to perform as soloists. I am providing
for my students the opportunity to learn as much as I can teach
them, about their voice, their understanding of music, their
ability to perform in public, and to move forward as confident,
capable, well-prepared musicians who are just fortunate enough
to be singers!
